ARM프로세서 : 데스크탑PC의 마이크로프로세스로

시장 조사 분석기관 IDC 는 2015년까지 ARM 프로세서가 노트북과 데스크톱 PC 마이크로 프로세서 시장의 15 %까지 점유율을 확대할 것으로 예측했다.

지금까지 스마트폰과 태블릿용 프로세서의 강자인 ARM은 인텔이 독점적 우위에 있는 PC 프로세서 시장 진출에 미온적일 수 밖에 없었다.

그러나 올해 들어 ARM 의 CEO인 워렌 이스트(Warren East)가 스마트폰과 태블릿 시장에 대한 판매 치중을 계속하며 현재 인텔의 시장 지배력을 고려해 볼 때 큰 이득을 얻지 못하더라도 PC 시장에 진출할 것이라는 의지를 전했다.

이는 인텔의 태블릿용 플랫폼, 코드명 오크 트레일(Oak Trail)이 등장하는 것과 무관하지 않다. 그 동안 ARM 프로세서의 주요 시장이었던 태블릿과 스마트폰 분야에서 벗어나 PC 프로세서 진출함으로써 인텔과 피할 수 없는 경쟁을 할 것임을 예고하고 있다.

그 계기는 MS가 태블릿 친화적인 운영체제 윈도우 8을 인텔과 ARM 두 프로세서에서 함께 지원하기로 한 데 있다. 이로 인해 ARM 의 PC 진출 및 윈도우 8 지원이 기정 사실화 되었으며 이에 맞춰 엔비디아, 퀄컴과 텍사스 인스트루먼트 같은 칩 제조 업체도 ARM 기반 프로세서로 윈도우 8을 대비할 것을 발표했다.

이미 노트북, 넷북 쪽에선 ARM 프로세서를 적용해 스마트북이라는 개념으로 소개된 바 있다. 문제는 ARM 프로세서가 데스크톱, 서버에 걸맞는 성능 향상을 꾀할 필요가 있다.

과연 태블릿과 스마트폰에서 일궈낸 ARM의 우위가 PC에서도 먹힐 것인지가 관건이다. ARM 기반 태블릿 사용자는 응용 프로그램의 호환성 등을 고려해 ARM PC를 선택할 수 있으며 마찬가지로 대다수의 x86 프로세서에서 실행되는 PC 응용 프로그램 사용자는 인텔 기반의 태블릿을 고를 수 있다.
